Railway information

 

The state-run railroad company Red Nacional de los Ferrocarilles Españoles (RENFE) covers a large number of lines connecting all the regions and the major cities. RENFE trains offer a wide range of high quality, comfort and punctuality. Most of these trains supply additional services such as phone facilities, snack bar or a restaurant.

The main cities have local networks connecting the smaller towns and villages. In Madrid there are 9 lines with frequent services of less than 15 minutes with a 95% punctuality

National Trains

  • From Madrid Central station travelers can easily reach any other destination in Spain. For example Madrid to Valencia is a 4-hour train ride.
  • RENFE also supplies night train services between several cities in Spain. A supplement is required for those trains.
  • "Cercanias" trains (suburban services), the newest trains in Europe with connections to: Toledo, Segovia and the Escorial Palace

High-Speed Trains

  • AVE  trains run at the speed of 186 mph on the following route:
    Madrid – Cordoba – Sevilla
    Madrid - Zaragoza - Lleida
  • EUROMED  trains run at 124 mph (200 km/h) on the track:
    Barcelona – Valencia/Alicante
  • ARCO trains run at 124 mph from
    Port Bou to Valencia
    Barcelona to Alicante to Murcia
  • ALARIS high speed trains run at 124 mph from:
    Madrid to Valencia to Castellon
  • ALTARIA  trains run at 124 mph on the following routes:
    Madrid – Alicante/ Algeciras/ Barcelona/ Cadiz/ Huelva/ Pamplona

All high-speed trains are subject to a supplement (in between €6,00 and €10,00) and sometimes a seat reservation is compulsary.

Services

 With Preferente/1st cl. reservations for the trains Alaris, Altaria, Alvia, AVE, Euromed and Talgo 200:

  • Free access to the "Sala Club" available in 17 of the most important stations (hot and cold beverage, snacks, press, departure informations, WC, etc.)
  • On board: Welcome beverage, press, meal in place, etc.
  • Free parking (24 h one way, 48 h way/return) in some stations.

With Preferente/1st cl. reservations for the Talgo, Intercity, etc:

  • Parking and "Sala Club".

Services included at this moment to the Turista/2nd class reservations for the trains Alaris, Altaria, Alvia, AVE, Euromed and Talgo 200 (for 1st class too) are free headphones for audio/video included (music/movies).

 

International Trains    

High-quality night trains leave early in the evening and arrive early in the morning, they are international connections between:

  • Madrid and Lisbon
  • Madrid and Paris
  • Barcelona and Paris
  • Barcelona and Milan
  • Barcelona and Zürich

 

 

 

 

National Night trains

 

High-quality national night trains leave early in the evening and arrive early in the morning, they connect:

  • Madrid - Barcelona
  • Madrid - La Coruña
  • Barcelona - Sevilla / Cádiz
  • Barcelona - Cordoba / Malaga / Granada

 

 


 

Airport connection

 

Barajas (Madrid)

 

Every 15 minutes there is a bus or metro service that links the airport with various other districts. It takes about 25 minutes. A taxi would need 15 minutes for the same destination.

 

 

 

El Prat (Barcelona)

 

Every 30 minutes there is a train service from the airport to the station Barcelona Sants, which takes 20 minutes.

 

 

 

Malaga

 

Every 30 minutes there is a train to Malaga main station. Journey time is 10 minutes. There are also services to Fuengirola and Torremolinos.
