Railway information

1,000 Trains per day cover 10,000 miles / 16,000 km of railroad track on the Italian rail network, operated by Trenitalia, the Italian Railways. They connect the big cities and the small towns in Italy and connect Italy with all the other European countries as well.

Day services

Eurostar Italia trains are high-speed trains connecting the larger Italian cities. For these trains a reservation is compulsory and a small supplement is charged. This supplement includes a reservation and in 1st class a welcome drink and hot or cold snack.

Intercity and Eurocity trains connect all main destinations inside and outside Italy. Seat reservation is compulsory.

Regional Trains link the smaller towns and villages, which are often situated in the most beautiful and picturesque regions of Italy. No need (and no possibility) to make reservations for those trains.

These night trains offer national and international long-distance links with couchettes or sleeping cars , sometimes even with private shower and bathroom.

Tourist information

Free boat crossings to the island of Sicily:

Trenitalia, the Italian Railways, has boat connections linking the Italian mainland with Sicily. There are frequent and fast connections taking about 35 minutes from Villa San Giovanni on the mainland, to Messina on Sicily. This crossing is free for Eurail Pass holders.

Airport information  

Roma Fiumicino International Airport

  • Every 15 minutes trains to Rome Tiburtina and Roma Ostiense by commuter trains
  • Leonardo express runs every 30 minutes, taking 30 minutes to Roma Termini station (only free for 1st-class Eurail Pass holders)

Milano

  • Every 30 minutes the Malpensa Express train runs to Milano Cadorna station. Journey time about 40 minutes. Eurail Pass is NOT valid on the Malpensa Express train

Pisa

  • Next to Roma and Milano, Pisa is the only Italian airport with a rail connection. Journey time to Pisa Central Station is about 5 minutes
